Scioto Downs Hosts First Leg of OSS for Freshman Trotters
From Eldorado Scioto Downs
It was a night of firsts, with seven $50,000 divisions of 2-year-old trotters going to post in the first leg of the Ohio Sires Stakes at Eldorado Scioto Downs on Saturday (July 11). Five of the winners won their first lifetime start, with Chris Page piloting the fastest winners for each gender – the filly, Envious Queen, who stopped the timer in 1:55.4 and Iluvmymoni, the fastest colt, who won in 1:56.3.
Envious Queen was a clear winner in 1:55.4 for trainer Steve Carter. Leading the field comfortably through fractions of :28.4, :59.1, and 1:27.3, Envious Queen posted a :28.1 last quarter to win by three and a quarter lengths over Miz Ella Paige (Sam Widger). Sweet Stevie (Kurt Sugg) was third. The win was Envious Queen’s first start after three qualifiers so far this season for owners Hatfield Stables, Cass Gallagher, and Carter. By Long Tom out of the RC Royalty mare Royal Envy, Envious Queen was a $35,000 Ohio Selected Yearling Sale purchase from Andrew Kauffman. Going off at 7-2, Envious Queen paid $9.80 to win.
Iluvmymoni took his division after securing the pocket trip to get up in the final strides to win in 1:56.3. Royal Moni (Trevor Smith) led the field through quarters of :30.1, :59.2, and 1:28 before Iluvmymoni came up the passing lane to win by a length and a half. Debt Free (Chris Lems) got up for third. Saturday’s win was the first start for Iluvmymoni, a gelding by Ready For Moni out of the Chapter Seven mare Iluvwineandroses who was a $60,000 Ohio Selected Yearling Sale purchase from Wayne Weaver by Brixton Medical and Hatfield Stables. Going off at 2-1, Iluvmymoni paid $6.80 to win.
The other three colt divisions were won by Walks The Fire (1:57), Roll’n In Moni (1:57.1), and Sigurd (1:57.3), the fastest two of which were piloted by Chris Lems.
There was a bit of give and go early on in the last division, which was the second-fastest colt division, with Way Too Easy (Brett Miller) taking the early lead towards the :28.4 opening quarter. Next Generation winner Commanders Moni (Mike Wilder) then took over and led through the :58.4 half. Lems pulled Walks The Fire just as the field was heading to the 1:28.4 three-quarters, and coming down the stretch, Walks The Fire prevailed by a neck over Sweet T’s Ranger (Page). Way Too Easy was third. Trained by Vernon Beachy for Trotters R Us and First Up Racing, Walks The Fire is by In Range out of the Cantab Hall mare Can Can Frisco. A $30,000 Harrisburg purchase from breeder Vernon Miller, Walks The Fire captured his first victory in his second lifetime start. Going off at 3-1, Walks The Fire paid $8.20 to win.
Roll’n In Moni rolled from post eight to win in 1:57.1, again for Lems but this time for trainer Scott Cox. Satan’s Fury (Wilder) led the field through fractions of :29, 1:00 and 1:29. Roll’n In Moni got away sixth and pulled as the field was headed towards the second turn. Steadily making up ground, Lems had Roll’n In Moni eye-to-eye with Satan’s Fury midway through the last turn and got up to win by a head. Motor Earle (Mike Micallef) was third. By Ready for Moni out of the Cincinnati Kid mare Ellens Lucky Roll, Roll’n In Moni was bred by Ernest Ayers and is owned by Vickie Jennings and Brad Nowakowski. The gelding is a perfect 2-for-2 and now has $30,000 in earnings. Sent off as the even-money favorite, Roll’n In Moni paid $4 to win.
Sigurd, a new addition to the Sandy Beatty barn, won the first division for colts in 1:57.3. Getting away sixth towards the :28.3 opening quarter, Beatty moved Sigurd and got cover as they reached the :58.1 half. Shortly after the 1:28 third-quarter, Sigurd moved three wide to advance down the stretch to win by a length and a quarter over Jet Range (Miller) and Turn Around Tommy (Lems). Shipping in from New York for last week’s Next Generation for owner-breeder Ann-Mari Daley, it was the first win in two starts for the Long Tom colt out of the RC Royalty mare Zanna Royal. Going off at 7-2, Sigurd paid $9.20 to win.
Kissme Ifyoucan won the first division for fillies in a new lifetime mark of 1:56 with Austin Hanners in the bike. Originally getting away second from the two hole, Hanners quickly moved the filly to take over just after the :29 opening quarter. Leading confidently the rest of the way through fractions of :59.1 and 1:28, Kissme Ifyoucan drew off to win by seven lengths for trainer Todd Luther and owner Greg Luther Racing. Lady Bountiful (Page) was second, with Rose Run Charm (Lems) finishing third. Fresh off a second place in the Next Generation on July 4, Kissme Ifyoucan now has $82,500 earned in her first three lifetime starts. Kissme Ifyoucan, by In Range out of the Malabar Man mare I Gotta Feelin, was a $160,000 Lexington Selected Yearling Sale purchase from breeder Polly Hilliard. The 1-5 favorite paid $2.40 to win.
Rose Run Cybill was a 27-1 upset winner in 1:57 in the last filly division of the evening. Getting the pocket trip behind Next Generation winner Made For More (Lems), Sugg watched as fractions of :29.4, :59, and 1:28.1 were put up on the board. Coming up the outside, Rose Run Cybill won by a length over Made For More. Lt’s Invitation (Miller) was third. It was the first start for the Daren Harvey trainee, a $77,000 Ohio Selected Yearling Sale purchase from Rose Run Farm. An In Range filly out of the Broadway Hall mare Rose Run Timeless, Rose Run Cybill is owned by Wayne Mast and Callam Racing. Going off at 3-1, Rose Run Cybill paid $8 to win.
