The Story of Kyleekash

By Nick Clegg, Northfield Park Horseman

As a parent, you don’t get to see what your child will blossom into before they enter the world.

When you purchase young horses, horsemen tend to go through them with a fine-tooth comb. They ensure that what they are buying perfectly meets the standards set forth by the trainer.

In the case of Kyleekash, the husband/wife team of Nick and Betty Clegg purchased the daughter of Glorious Virgin for $10,000 from the Blooded Horse Sale in November of 2023. It was almost like purchasing a $10,000 mystery box.

When Kyleekash showed up 4-1/2 hours later from the sale, she wasn’t exactly what the Clegg’s had hoped for.

A few days after the purchase, husband Nick Clegg began to show her the ropes and took her out onto the track at MGM Northfield Park. As he jogged her, he thought to himself, “Wow she has some talent in her.”

As other horses moved up next to her, her ears began to rise, and while she acted playful, she showed no fear, reaching over to try to bite other horses. At that point, Clegg knew of a perfect name for his fearless filly: Kyleekash.

Kyleekash reminded him of another little girl, Kylee Kash, the daughter of reinsman Keith Kash Jr., who was born relatively small and had the prettiest smile. While she comes off as the sweetest little thing, her athletic fight is what truly sticks out in her. While Kylee is the nicest person and would do anything for her community, once it is time to compete, she becomes a fierce growling competitor with a never-say-die attitude.

Almost two years ago to the day, Kylee Kash has gone on to be an award-winning athlete that has an entire room full of trophies, awards, and accolades, while the filly named for her has 16 wins and over $110,000 in career earnings.

Kylee Kash will compete in the District Finals for soccer on Saturday (Oct. 25) at Nordonia High School.
