Scioto Downs Weekend Report

June 18, 19 & 20, 2010

Saturday Night~Sand Summerfield paces fastest mile of Scioto meet
Sand Summerfield wanted to be in front in the Billy Dart Series at Scioto Downs on Saturday night and that’s where driver Chris Page put him.

The pair had 10 pacers pursuing them but fought hard to win in 1:52.4, fastest mile of the 2010 Scioto season. Sand Summerfield is trained by Jim Arledge for owner Bill Sanders of Tennessee. Arledge sent an entry of three pacers into this leg of the Billy Dart Series and they finished first, second, and fourth.

As the 11 pacers went in behind the gate, track announcer Barry Vicroy said, “Fasten your seats belt. This could get wild.”

Standing Tough, one of the Arledge pacers, left fast to grab the lead and pass the quarter-mile marker in 27.4. Page soon had Sand Summerfield on the move and took control passing the stands the first time. The entrymates raced 1-2 for the rest of the mile with Sam’s Slot Machine third in the pocket and Look Yankee trying to mount a first-over challenge for Devan Miller.

In the stretch, Sand Summerfield and Stand Tough drew away from the field with the winner having a three-quarter length edge at the wire.
Sam’s Slot Machine was 7-1/4 lengths back in third. Kid Cruiser, the third Arledge pacer, nipped Look Yankee for fourth money.

Sand Summerfield is a sophomore son of Mantacular. It was his third win in nine starts this season and his second win in a row in the Billy Dart Series.

Friday Night~Trotter pays $189 in Scioto victory

Barbies Secrit rolled off cover to win the second race of the evening at Scioto Downs on Friday night and pay a $189 for a $2 win ticket.

Trainer-driver Kayne Kauffman drove the 4-year-old trotting mare to victory in 2:00.2 by 1-1/2 lengths over Clem’s Pride, Count N Caloris, and Fried By Five. It was the second win of the season for Barbies Secrit in seven starts. She had been racing at Hoosier Park, but was scratched sick from her most recent start.

The previous night’s racing program at Scioto started with The Libbertariann winning and paying $144.20 to win.

Too Good To Pass lived up to his name in an impressive 1:56.2 win in the fastest division of the Dream Of Glory Series for trotters on Friday night. He scored for driver Dan Noble, trainer Virgil Morgan, Jr. and owners Y. Prudenzano and B. Kellis. It was the third win in five starts this season for the Jailhouse Jesse colt. He led all the way and won comfortably by 1-1/4 lengths. Over Spurred was second while Shelby County picked up the third-place check.

Favored Buckeye Man took the other division of the Dream Of Glory Series for trotters on Friday night as he scored for trainer Dee Hotton and driver Chip Noble in 1:57.3. It was the third win in four starts this season for the sophomore gelding by Jailhouse Jesse. He prevailed over Hezahumer and Not To Be Denied. Trainer Hotton co-owns the winner with R.R. Fuller.

Thursday Night~Chris Page has hot hand in Scioto features
Driver Chris Page showed why he's the defending champion driver at Scioto Downs as he captured three of the track's four features on Thursday night.

Page drove the winners of both divisions of the Floating Dream Series and added a division of the Steamin' Demon Series. He scored an easy with with Cb Sammy Suit in the opening division of the third leg of the Floating Dream. He sent the favored filly to the front and guided her to an easy 1:57.1 triumph for owner-trainer Steve Carter. She had 2-3/4 lengths on Steady Noire while Wildfire Princess was well back in third.

The second Floating Dream split went to Page and Southwind Rah Rah, but in this win Page reserved his horse off a moderate early pace and was still able to gun down the pacesetting Becauseofyou in the stretch. The time was 1:58. Becauseofyou held for second while I'm Special Two held for third. The winner is owned by trainer Virgil Morgan,Jr. in partnership with Allen Skolnick and Jim Darrow.

Page's win in the Steamin Demon came behind Cruisinfullthrottle, a sophomore son of Yankee Cruiser. He scooted to the front in the second quarter and never relinquished the lead. Indian's Rocket was second in the 1:56.3 effort and Three New Dawns got the show dough. Tye Loy trains the winner for owner Roger Morlock.

The other division of the Steamin Demon went to Solid Stand, an easy-does-it winner for driver Jeff Nisonger. The even-money favorite led all the way to win by 3-1/4 lengths in 1:57 over Lookettejasper and Six Shooting Billy. Solid Stand is owned by Bill Webb, Brady Galliers, and Jane Galliers and trained by Webb.
