Gran Cameo Upsets in Scioto Opener

Gran Cameo beat co-favorites Sabine’s Filly and Yndra Hanover to take the opening night feature at Scioto Downs on Friday.
Sent off at odds of 10-1 by the bettors, Gran Cameo scampered to a two-length victory in a time of 1:54.2. Driver Jack Dailey had Grand Cameo perfectly positioned throughout the race as she followed Yndra Hanover during the second half of the mile, then overtook her and fought off the rally of Sabine’s Filly.
It was the second win in nine starts this season for Grand Cameo, who is trained by Charles Ross for owner Jerry Grant of Pleasant Plain, Ohio. She paid $22.00 to win. Sabine’s Filly was second while Yndra Hanover held on for third.
Near The Limit took the evening’s top trotting event with for trainer-driver J.D. Wengerd. The eight-year-old gelded son of Yankee Glide defeated Florida Mac Attack and Littlebitofhoney. The winner is owned by Bert Dale Hershberger of Millersburg, Ohio.
A large crowd braved warnings of a possible tornado to usher in the 2010 racing season at Scioto Downs. Racing continues on Saturday night with post time at 6:30. |
