Scioto Downs Weekend Report
May 27, 2010
Saturday Night Dance With Dan got a perfect pocket trip and won Saturday’s fastest pace at Scioto Downs in 1:53.3 over Doc’s Yankee and pacesetting Big Bad TJ. Kyle Bolon was in the bike behind the son of Precious Bunny who went off as the even-money favorite.
Driver J.D. Wengerd sent Big Bad TJ to the front from post nine and cut evenly-rated fraction without a challenge until the final quarter. Then Dance With Dan launched his attack and Doc’s Yankee rallied from fourth place to pass the leader in the homestretch. Kent McGee trains and co-owns Dance With Dan with Charles Minger. The winner is a 4-year-old and last year he recorded the fastest mile of the Scioto meet when he paced in 1:51.2. It was the first win in six starts for the pacer this season.
Two divisions of the Falcon Almahurst series were contested at Scioto and the first was taken by Alex Capital with a comfortable come-from-behind victory for driver Chip Noble in 1:56.4. John Tatham trains the sophomore colt for Brian Tatham. The other division went to the 4-year-old mare Resort Art in a gate-to-wire win in 1:57.4. It was her second straight win and third in six starts this season. Kayne Kauffman drove her for trainer Doug Stovall and owner Lois Stovall.
Avenue A took advantage of fast fractions to win the fastest division of the Columbus Claiming Series in 1:55.1 as driver J.D. Wengerd kept him in last place in the six-horse field for the first half-mile, then moved him into contention. In the stretch he paced away to a 3-1/4 length win for trainer Christopher Short and owner Phillip Groves. It was the third straight for the son of Artsplace.
Chisum took the other division of the Columbus Claiming Series as driver Jack Dailey got away with leisurely fractions on the front end and held off his pursuers in the homestretch to win in 1:58. Rob Zink trains for owner Ken Terpenning. It was his first victory at Scioto this season after two second-place finishes.

Jeff Nisonger left alertly with Kay’s Yankee Lou to grab the early lead from post six. When Page moved Tomorrowpan, it took her a while to take command. In the final quarter, however, Tomorrowpan pulled away from her pursuers entering the stretch and then coasted to a ¾-length win. It was the first win of the season in two starts for the 4-year-old daughter of No Pan Intended.
Dyno Trevor captured the featured Friday night trot with a 1:57.4 win. Driver Kyle Bolon kept him in third place during the first half-mile while ST’s Hooray and then Dream On Shorty took turns on the front end. Thursday Night Shackleton Hanover, a 4-year-old son of Real Artist, ignored post 10 in the second tier to overwhelm in his rivals on Thursday night at Scioto Downs. He won by 8-1/2 lengths in 1:57 over the rain-soaked surface.
The gelded pacer was still eighth after the first half-mile, but driver Jack Dailey had him out and moving with determination. He seized control in the third quarter and simply drew away from his rivals with disdain. Jack Dailey’s brother Jeff piloted Gator Hayes to a second-place finish while Fox Valley Lingo got up for third.
