May 20, 2010
Saturday Night Trainer-driver Devan Miller drove her sophomore pacing colt Look Yankee with absolute confidence on Saturday night at Scioto Downs, posting a gate-to-wire 1:53.1 win. It was only the second start of the season for the son of Yankee Cruiser and he lowered his freshman mark of 2:01.1 by eight full seconds. He paid $14.60 in defeating Booze Hound and Kid Cruiser. The winner is owned by Elden Hall of New Carlisle, Ohio. He made 17 starts last season with only two victories, the fastest at Raceway Park.
In the evening’s featured event, Spartan Pride won with a stretch rally for trainer-driver Kayne Kauffman in 1:55. The pacing gelding overtook Big Bad TJ in deep stretch to notch his second win of the Scioto season. Surf LA finished third. Mary Alice Godown owns the winner. Resort Art scored in the first division of the Falcon Almahurst series for trainer Doug Stovall and driver Kayne Kauffman. The 4-year-old mare defeated One Hot Yankee in the 1:56.3 effort.
The other division of the Falcon ALmahurst went to Northern Smoke Out who got a pocket trip behind D-E Cruiser Eric and then passed on the inside in the stretch. The mile was in 1:57.3 and Alex Capital was third. Elm Grove Gerson and driver Chris Page scored in the first division of the second leg of the Columbus Claiming Series with a hard-fought 1:57.3 victory over Stubbysleisureguy.
Avenue A outpaced Chisum in the stretch to win the second division of the Columbus Claiming Series, repeating the result of last week. This time Avenue A’s victory was timed in 1:56.4.
Ohio Hall of Famer Chip Noble put on a driving clinic early in the program, winning three of the first four races on the card.
Friday Night Hardwood Chips rallied off the final turn to overtake Maple Point and Near The Limit to win the Open Handicap Trot at Scioto Downs on Friday night. The 5-year-old gelding was timed in 1:56.1 over a track rated good after day-long rains.
J.D. Wengerd sent Near The Limit to the front at the start while the favored Maple Point settled in the pocket behind the leader. Driver Chip Noble kept Hardwood Chip third most of the mile, then stirred up his trotter to catch the leaders in the final strides. Hardwood Chip won by a neck while Maple Point had a neck over Near The Limit.
Deep Chip, second favorite in the betting, launched a first-over attack past the half-mile marker, but he stalled in the stretch. Hardwood Chips is owned by Paul Acker of Marion, Ohio and trained by Frank Todd, Jr. He was making his first start after three qualifiers at Scioto.
In the Filles and Mares Open Handicap Pace, heavy favorite Don’t Blame Her drew off easily in the stretch to score in 1:54 for owner Matthew Toler of Bidwell, Ohio. Dan Noble drove for trainer Virgil Morgan, Jr. Danika Hanover and Yndra Hanover took turns on the lead as Noble kept Don’t Blame Her in the middle of the pack until the winner began her relentless move to the top. Don’t Blame Her overtook Yndra Hanover entering the stretch while Mexicali Rose rallied to grab second money from Yndra Hanover.
Once again, Ohio Hall of Famer Chip Noble and son Dan dominated the drivers at Scioto as each scored a trio of victories on the 10-race card.
Thursday Night Driver Chris Page showed why he was the leading driver at Scioto Downs last year as he took four trips to the winner’s circle on Thursday night.
The native of Mt. Vernon, Ohio won with Forever A Cowgirl for trainer Steve Carter and owner Dorothy Miller by swinging her three wide on the final turn to overtake the leaders in the stretch. At the wire, she had a 1-1/2 length lead on her rivals in the 1:57 mile. Page also scored with Pte’s Desire, a sophomore son of Real Desire, for trainer Carter and owner Chuck Grubbs. He took the lead in the opening half and won comfortably in 1:58.
Page’s other wins came behind the pacing females Bunnysexpresslane in 1:58.2 and Must Be The Best in 1:59.1.
The father-and-son team of Chip Noble and Dan Noble both scored driving doubles on Thursday night. The younger Noble is leading all Scioto drivers in wins thus far in the 2010 season.
Wednesday Night U Betta Winna wasn’t in the race for three-quarters of a mile on Wednesday night at Scioto Downs, but he was in the winner’s circle after the race.
Ohio Hall of Famer Chip Noble drove the 4-year-old pacing gelding to victory in 1:57.1 after the leaders tired and U Betta Winna went from last to first in the final quarter. His winning margin was a half-length over the 47-1 Shackleton Hanover and the 14-1 Megawatt. Favored Stucker Bunny, driven by Dan Noble, set fast fractions, but paid the price in the final quarter as he faded to fifth.
U Betta Winna paid $14.20 to win while the exacta paid $250.80. It was the first win of the 2010 season in five starts for U Betta Winna, who is trained by Mike Evans for owners Jason Solomon and Mark Nolan, both of Ohio. It was only his second win in 37 career starts.
Also on the Wednesday card, the trotting mare Lillians Chip was impressive in her 8-1/2 length win in 1:58 for trainer Ed Bibler and driver Dan Noble. Ethel Schneider of Pennsylvania owns the gate-to-wire winner.
