River Downs Establishes Surrender Stall

Cincinnati's River Downs has established a "surrender stall" program for horse owners who can no longer care for their animals. The program was established in response to the removal of six allegedly malnourished horses from a farm operated by former Thoroughbred horse trainer Chad Moore, said River Downs Publicity Director John Engelhardt.
Clermont County animal control officials removed six allegedly malnourished horses, one pony and one donkey from Moore's farm last month. The carcasses of at least 10 horses were also found on the property.
Two mares were euthanized shortly after the removal and the surviving animals are receiving rehabilitative care. Moore has been charged with two counts of animal abandonment and two counts of animal cruelty.
The new program will get under way when racing resumes at River Downs in April, Engelhardt said.
Owners who surrender their horses will be required provide information about the animal and surrender all pertinent Jockey Club documents. Surrendered horses will remain at the track pending placement at appropriate rescue facility.
Track officials are also working with equine industry members in the area to establish a regional network to help at-risk horses, Engelhardt said.
The organization will establish an equine welfare tip line and a Web site containing resources for owners in need. Members will also assist law enforcement officials in equine cruelty cases, said group co-founder Donna Moore. |
