Northfield Park Weekend Wrap-up
July 11, 2010
Dan Charlino continued his assault on the Northfield stats page over the weekend, winning six races Friday (an off night considering his nine win performance the previous Friday night) and then taking both features Saturday en route to a second consecutive six-bagger.
The twelve win weekend moved Charlino within five wins of Aaron Merriman for the local lead and gave him 23 wins over the last four cards in which he has driven at Northfield. He took Tuesday night off. In Saturday's $5,500 Open Pace, Charlino stalked the field from fourth with Delivered Rules ($5.60) as 9-10 favorite Sammy's Cool Win set the fractions. He pulled the Charles O'Neal owned and trained stallion first up and ground out a win in 1:53.2, half a length better than the favorite, with Camcoder third. The time was a lifetime best for the six-year-old son of Sealed N Delivered and pushed his career earnings to $86,749, with $25,648 of it coming this year.
of the Northfield railbirds are sure if trainer Fred Winstead Jr. is having a great year because Charlino is driving for him, or if Charlino is having a great year because he drives for Winstead. Regardless, Winstead's .500+UTRS makes his horses a near sure thing and Master Buckin Uhl ($3.40) proved that in the $6,000 Open Trot. Owned by William Cantrell of Oil Springs, Kentucky, WInstead's primary patron, Charlino steered the four-year-old Master Lavec gelding to his eighth win in 23 seasonal starts, after winning just once prior to 2010. He went gate-to-wire after being parked to the quarter, winning in a lifetime best 1:57.2 for the second consecutive week. Ryan Stahl piloted Mike Epler's Lite Me Up ($2.40) to the fastest mile of the night. Dropping out of Open competition, Lite Me Up went gate-to-wire in 1:52.1 to win a $3,800 overnight event. |
