Charlino Wins Five Including Open Trot

April 5, 2010

On a night where ten of 13 winners won basically in gate-to-wire fashion, drivers Aaron Merriman and Dan Charlino took good note of the track bias in Northfield's featured races.

In the $6,000 Open Pace, Merriman put Painted Speed ($3.80), a Ryan Angus-trainee, on the front and never looked back through fractions of 27.2, 56/1 and 1:24.2 en route to a 1:53 mile, fastest of the season over the Flying Turns. At the wire, Todd Liebman's six-year-old Real Artist gelding was 3/4 of a length in front of Dan CHaz, while Camcoder finished third.

Painted SPeed has now won 19 of 108 lifetime starts, banking $72,202. The mile set a new lifetime standard.

Little Old Ladywho ($3.80), languishing in $5,000 claimers just three starts back, won the $5,500 Open Trot by a neck over Awsome Andrea, another former claimer, in 1:58.2 The seven-year-old Master Lavec mare has now won $111,022 in her career. Fred Winstead trains Little Old Ladywho for WIlliam Cantrell of Oil Spring, Kentucky. He called on Dan Charlino to drive.

The win was one of five on the card for Charlino, who swept the last three races. Ryan Stahl tripled and Sam Schillaci picked up a driving double, piloting Pronger and Hez Ruthless N, a pair he trains, to victory.
