Tough Weekend For Little Brown Jug Eligibles
June 13, 2010
This was quite a weekend of upsets among leading contenders for the 65th Little Brown Jug to be raced Thursday, September 23 at the Delaware, OH County Fairgrounds.
Early season sensation Rock N Roll Heaven broke stride near the half of the second division of the Burlington Stakes at Mohawk Raceway and finished last to Ideal Matters; reigning two-year-old champion Sportswriter finished fourth to Kyle Major in the first Burlington Division; and Breeders Crown Champion All Speed Hanover was runnerup to BG’s Folly in the $500,000 Anthony Abbatiello New Jersey Classic at The Meadowlands.
Fred And Ginger was the most impressive of the Jug-eligible stakes winners this past weekend. With Brian Sears in the sulky, Fred And Ginger won his division of the $265,920 PA Sires Stakes in 1:48.4 at The Meadows, the fastest mile ever at that track and one tick faster than Well Said’s victory in 2009. Other PA division winners, all Jug eligible, were Four Stars Trace (1:51.4), Versado (1:50.4) and Pang Shui (1:50.4).
Jug eligible BG’s Folly equaled the New Jersey Classic stakes record of 1:49.1 in defeating All Said Hanover and Allthatgltrsisgold.
One More Laugh, who won the $600,000 Governor’s Cup Final in 2009, defeated non-Jug eligible He’s Gorgeous and We Will See in the $250,000 Art Rooney at Yonkers. One More Laugh scored in 1:53.3.
Kyle Major won the first Burlington division in 1:50.1 over Twin B Warrior (not eligible to Jug) and Dr. Dreamy. Ideal Matters defeated Stonebridge Tonic in 1:50.1 and two non-Jug eligibles, Keystone Raptor and BP Chimo, finished one-two in the third division. Aracache Hanover was third.
The $50,000 eliminations of the North America Cup on Saturday, June 19 at Mohawk Racetrack is next up for three-year-old pacing colts and geldings. |
