Eligibility Guidelines for Grooms Health Insurance


Groom must certify that 75% of their earned income is derived from grooming harness horses for an Ohio licensed and stabled trainer and must stand to prove such with a W-2 form in the event of a challenged eligibility. The groom must not appear as a programmed trainer unless the sole owner of one (1) horse. For grooms to be eligible and remain eligible to the insurance plan, their employing trainer must also meet the following guidelines:

The Trainer must be a current member of the OHHA, be a licensed Trainer who is a resident of Ohio, earns 75% of their earned income training and racing horses with 50% of their programmed starts or 150 programmed starts per year at Ohio commercial race tracks and/or county fairs. True stake races are exempt. Early closers and late closers are not exempt.

The trainer must be currently racing/training at an Ohio commercial racetrack in order to enroll a groom onto the insurance plan. The Trainer must have a current signed trainer responsibility letter on file at the OHHA office. All grooms signups are done at the track with the Track Representative at the OHHA office. Eligible tracks are Lebanon Raceway, Northfield Park, Raceway Park and Scioto Downs.

The Grooms Insurance premium is funded from purse pool accounts at each racetrack. There is no premium charge to the groom or trainer as long as they meet the above requirements.
