Karen Ewing's Down The Stretch

January 11, 2010

Lesterstrikesagain will be remembered as a true warrior. The ten year old was euthanized on December 30 after having a wonderful racing career and capturing the hearts of many.

In 250 career starts, Lesterstrikesagain recorded 41 wins, 45 seconds and 34 third place efforts. Retiring at the age of 10, the hard-knocking gelding closed the book on his racing career with $542,912 in purses. His mark of 1:54.4 was taken at Mohawk Racetrack at the age of six. He won his last race in April of 2009 and was enjoying retirement.

“He was just a great little horse. The whole situation with having to put him down has been very hard on our family since he was our pet and we truly loved him,” said Jenny Lalonde, his owner since 2004. “But his arthritic problem with a coffin bone had gotten the best of him and he was in a lot of pain and hardly able to walk”, said Lalonde.

Dan Krebehenne of Richwood bred Lesterstrikesagain. He was named after Dan’s father Lester, who passed away before the colt was born. As a two-year-old, Lesterstrikesagain went to post 14 times for Krebehenne. He had five wins, five seconds and finished third in the Ohio Breeders Championship. Dan’s daughter, Mary, took care of the horse.

Patty Krebehenne said, “He was a fun horse to race and the extended family was always with us when he raced at the fairs. Even after we sold him, we continued to watch him throughout his career. He was a beautiful foal and a great looking horse. I’m sure Lester has met his namesake and I can see the two of them on the track.”

Sporty Babe won for owner Wayne Temple. Sporty Babe sat sixth until the half when he started picking them off one by one to get to the top, going on and winning by one and one quarter lengths.

Caramel Dumpling finished second for trainer Herb LeVan. Dumpling was seventh at the three quarters when he went three deep to make his charge down the stretch.   Both of Roy Justice’s horses finished fourth this week, Stepping High and Classy Sarah. Don Pfister finished fifth with Ellie Deer.

From the Bibler Stable, Madge’s Jackpot made a strong effort at the finish to get up for second. Queens Scooter finished third for owner Calvin Lamb and Rudy who is now owned by Bibler finished fifth.
