Table Games Legalized for Delaware Racetracks

January 29, 2010

Table games could be operating at three Delaware racetracks sometime this summer.

After passing the state House and Senate, Gov. Jack Markell signed the legislation into law Jan. 28. According to the Wilmington News Journal, the state anticipates more than $40 million in revenue from table games in 2011.

The gaming pits will be located at Delaware Park, Dover Downs, and Harrington Raceway & Casino, which already have video lottery terminals. Table games earlier this year were approved for racetracks in neighboring Pennsylvania.

The Delaware horse racing industry will get 4.5% of table games revenue to go along with the 9%-10% it current receives from VLTs. Track operators will get 66.1% of table games revenue, and the state 29.4% under a plan negotiated earlier.

The horse racing industry in Pennsylvania will receive no revenue from table games, which could be operational later this year.

Table games were part of 2009 legislation that authorized sports betting at Delaware racetracks. The state, which can offer only limited parlay bets on professional football, recently appealed restrictions on sports betting to the United States Supreme Court.
